Mini interview: Kayo of Mi Cielo
Tell us a little about yourself and your shop.
I am…
a woman of 87.5% Japanese and 12.5% Russian;
a wife of one creative husband and a mother of one beautiful child who is freakishly tall but a gentle giant;
a world-traveler who traveled about 40 countries; and
an owner of mi cielo who loves to keep designing and hand-making unique items for the unique people!
How did you come up with your name?
I’ve always loved how Spanish speaking people call their little ones “mi cielo” with the deepest love and the most affections. I like how it sounds too.
When did you first become interested in your craft?
I can’t remember exactly but I was making little dolls when I was about 5, which my parents still have displayed in their house.
What inspires you?
My son. He is the reason why mi cielo was born! Breath taking nature of Hawaii, bluest ocean, greenest mountains, bright flowers…
What is your work space like?
Very compact! I literally work in the tiny corner space in our dining room. Shirts are piked up in our bedroom and my son’s closet. LoL
I would love to get a separate studio space someday soon…
Any tips or advice for anyone wanting to be in your shoes?
Keep creating as long as you love doing it! Think of smiles that you bring to the buyers and their families and friends when you get overwhelmed.
If you had to pick any item from your store to be your favouties which would it be?
