Mini interview: Faheema from Unicorn Crafts
Tell us a little about yourself and your shop.
My name is Faheema Chaudhury. I studied art at UC Berkeley and worked with and around artists for the past 4 and a half years. After the recent passing of my mother I moved back to LA and started making jewelry. What started as just a way to pass time, turned into a full-blown business.
How did you come up with your name?
I love unicorns and the idea of a magical creature that just brings a smile to your face just at the mention of the word “unicorn.” It’s very innocent but can resonate a feeling at all ages.
When did you first become interested in your craft?
I’ve always done something artistic from the time I was in grade school. I like to try a little bit of everything and have it all come fun circle.
What inspires you?
When I look at something and I want to explode because of how cute it is, that’s what inspires me. That feeling that comes over you and makes you feel like a kid. A motto of mine is “If you look at my work and don’t get a cavity from how cute it is, I didn’t do my job.”
What is your work space like?
I mainly work out my bedroom. I have my supplies all around me and try to keep as organized as I can. Sometimes when my sister wants me to hang out with her, I’ll try to do some of my work in the living room.
Any tips or advice for anyone wanting to be in your shoes?
Etsy is a good foot through the door. You can see which items get more views and added to favorites lists. From that information you can take the next step of applying to local craft shows and being the face of your company.
If you had to pick any item from your store to be your favouties which would it be?
I love the Hopefully Not the Last, Unicorn Earrings. They are tiny unicorns, how could you not fall in love with them?
Another recent add to the shop are the White Elephant Earrings. Tiny things make me happy in a way that I cannot even describe.
I want to keep working on expanding Unicorn Crafts; seeing my jewelry in stores and all over the world would be fantastic. My jewelry represents joy and reliving your kid at heart mind-set so, to share that with other interested in my work is such a great feeling.
