Masking fluid is awesome
Today I am going to tell you all about one of my favourite art mediums Masking Fluid.
If you have not seen this product before boy oh boy are you in for a treat!
Masking fluid is a liquid rubber/latex type substance. It is typically a watercolour medium but I always like to push the boundrys of what art products “should” be used for. 🙂 I guess thats the crafty side in me over ruling the “artist” side of me…
It has a yellow pigment in it so you can see it easily on the page. So if you get a bottle and its all yellow at the bottom its totally fine. Just give it a shake and it’s good to go. 🙂
There is also colourless versions available if you are against the yellow for some reason…

So the idea of masking fluid is that is “masks” the area you apply it to. check out the pic process below to see how it works.
Apply the masking fluid to the page with a paint brush.
TIP: This is important!! Do not use your best paint brushes! Choose your crappiest looking brush and use that. Pick one you would use with glue. something like that. If you can even write on it masking fluid brush. After using masking fluid on a brush it does not hold paint as well as it should. Of course wash out the brush as soon as you can and it might be ok but still dont use your good ones. Just incase. 🙂
After the masking fluid it totally dry apply your watercolour paint over the top. I have chosen really simple words to write to demonstrate this for you but don’t hesitate to do more intricate work. Masking fluid does not spread once you apply it to the page. It’s pretty awesome that way actually. it will go exactly where you put it.
When the paint is dry peel off the masking fluid.
You can do this with a rubber (eraser) or just use your finger. As you can see I use the finger option. 🙂
I just feel you have a bit more control that way…
Once you get enough of it off the page you can pull the rubbery masking fluid off the page. This a good way to do it becuase there is less chance you will mark the white space with your fingers.
MASKING FLUID AND INK
Same process I just wanted to show you how it looks with ink (seriously awesome!)
MASKING FLUID AND WATERCOLOUR PENCIL
Cover the masking fluid-ed area with pencil. Just scribble all over it!
Blend the pencil with water.
If you have not seen watercolour pencils before you really are missing out and need to get yourself a set A.S.A.P!!!
Rub the masking fluid off just as you would if you had painted the paper.
TA DA!
Ahh… I just love this stuff. 🙂
Have you used masking fluid before? 🙂
Dom.

Ive never heard of that stuff, now I want some! hehe : )
you should totally get some! you wont regret it! 🙂 any art shop should have it. 🙂
this is pretty awesome stuff. Is this something that Hobby Lobby or Micheals would sell? about how much does this run? How long does it take to dry?
Thanks for sharing!!
Sunlite- Sorry we don't have those shops here so I'm not sure if they would stock it. Any "art" store should have it. 🙂
It usually costs around $12 (that's Aussie dollars) it could vary in other countries due to taxes and shipping and stuff like that…
It doesn't take to long to dry. I would leave it for about 15 mins and it should be done. But it depends how thickly you apply it.
Thanks for your questions! 🙂
both Hobby Lobby and Michaels both sell it. I bought a bottle last week w/a 50% off coupon which ended up costing me less than $7! I haven't yet tried it. I want to do a journal page w/it. I am excited about using my water color pencils with it!
