Interview with Danielle Spurge
Meet Danielle Spurge
Super cleaver creative lady of The Merriweather Council
Who is the lady behind The Merriweather Council? Who is Danielle?
I am a 22 year old recent college grad living in Boston, MA. I like traveling near and far, watching crime solving tv shows, drinking iced lattes and listening to cheesy pop music. I craft and run my business out of my apartment!
How did you come up with the name?
The name Merriweather Council was a code phrase my friends and I used for “Gril Scouts” which we thought was uncool to talk about at school. We were the only ones we knew who had stuck with girl scouting through high school and we felt weird about it because we were extremely impressionable, so we called it The Merriweather Council.
How would you describe your pieces?
“The most fun you can have in a hoop.” – love that. 🙂
What inspires you most?
Going shopping for supplies always gets my wheels turning – I think it’s the colors. My imagination goes into overdrive and I have to get home and get to work!
Where do you make your beautiful creations? What is your work space like?
I have a small studio space set up in my living room. I have my sewing machine and my fabric closet and an ironing board… lots of stuff for making things. It’s kind of messy but I like it that way, it feels more approachable.
What is your favourite of being a creative entrepreneur?
Don’t you just love that phrase. creative entrepreneur. just sounds so great. 🙂
I do love that phrase! I enjoy being able to work on my own time, and whenever I feel most creative, unscheduled creativity is the best kind! I also enjoy working towards making this a really viable lifestyle, sot just a dream.
When did you start sewing?
I started sewing at a very young age, but I’m not exactly sure. Probably six or seven.
You fabrics are wonderful! How do you select fabrics you want to use?
Sometimes I just pick randomly, other times I work with color schemes. I just pick them as I go along, I don’t plan it out.
Do you have a favourite piece?
I really love all my patchwork buntings best. They are very time consuming but I love the way they turn out so unique!
Have you sold your stuff at markets too?
Yes, I’ve done some markets here in Boston over the past summer. It was fun!
Which do you prefer, selling online or in person?
I think selling online is great for telling the item’s story, in person sometimes people won’t ask questions and it can be awkward to just speak at them but they don’t know what they are looking at. Also, online I can show you the best picture of an item, in real life the lighting at the venue affects what you see. In person events are awesome but so much can affect the outcome – weather, day of the week, time of day, etc… Online I have a lot more control.
Any advice you can give anyone reading this who wants to do what you do?
Just get started! Thinking about doing something will never get you anywhere. You need to start somewhere. Even if your first few attempts don’t work out, you’ll learn something.
I promise. Keep going.
Last of all if you could be any cartoon caracter who would you be and why? 🙂
Hmmm… maybe Minnie Mouse. I was in Disney World recently and we went to
visit “her house” and she had a whole room dedicated to quilting!
I urge you all to check out the links bellow for more merriweather council love!
