Confession: Sometimes I suck at crafty stuff…
Tonight I had a BRILLIANT idea!
I was going to embroider on these great vintage fabrics that my grandmother had given me. If you follow me on instagram you would’ve seen this pic go up only a few hours ago…
I gave this a red hot go for about 30 minutes before I got all down in the dumps. It wasn’t working. I couldn’t decide if I should do a contrasting pattern over the florals, follow the prints already on the fabrics, mix up the colours… I tried all of these but I was just getting no where… well no where that was aesthetically pleasing anyway.
As a craft blogger and working in a crafty/creative industry I put a lot of pressure on myself to be awesome at all things crafty all the time. Like ALL THE TIME! Alas this is not the case. Time after time I get really down and start doubting my skills and why I even bother trying.
Only tonight did I realise that there are probably a lot of you who feel the same way sometimes. I am writing this post to tell you all (and future me, when I feel like this again… which I KNOW I will)
IT IS OK TO FAIL!
Seriously, just get over it. You cannot be awesome all of the time! You just can’t. Even the most amazing of creatives feel like they get it wrong some times.
To be honest I think it is GOOD to feel like that sometimes. If you LOVE everything you make EVERYTIME it means one of two things.
1. Some of the stuff you make is shit and you don’t realise.
2. You are simply not stepping outside your comfort zone.
No one wants number one but number two may be fine for some people. You might have discovered you are an ace with a fabric marker and you have no urge to expand your skills and try some other things. But I’m not that kind of crafter. I will not succeed in my chosen career without learning new skills.
A little letter to the not to distant future me…
Dear future me,
You have such a desire to be a Jill of all crafts but this doesn’t come without LEARNING.
If you have attempted an embroidery piece and it’s not working just put it away and relax. Stretch a fresh piece of fabric, grab your favourite coloured threads and just play! Try getting on YouTube and learn a new stitch. If this doesn’t work just put it down and do something else.
Just because you have a spare moment to create something it doesn’t mean you HAVE to!
Craft is fun. Keep it that way. 🙂
Love past you.
Do you ever feel a little down on yourself? Doubt your skills?
How do you get yourself through it?
