Border Co.
Justine Bolzon is a super talented wood worker and the creative behind the lovely brand Border Co.
Each Border Co. piece is crafted in Justine’s home workshop, in suburban Adelaide. Every piece of timber used has its own story, whether it began its journey as a drawer front or a fence post.
Each piece is truly one of a kind, and totally beautiful. I asked Justine a few questions about how she creates her work. Take a squiz at her answers below.
Where/how do you source your wood?
When I began Border co I sourced all of my timber from local hard rubbish collections, using old fence posts, furniture, floor boards – anything that was wooden to make all of my pieces. As the business has grown, however, hard rubbish hasn’t been enough so I’ve started getting timbers from local salvage yards and from a few local timber merchants who have ethically sourced wood.
Do you have a favourite piece to make?
My favourite pieces change all the time, but I tend to get addicted to trying new things and then that’s all I’ll want to make for a while – until I think of the next thing to try! I started out doing a lot of boards but I’ve moved into mainly carved items, like spoons and scoops. And I’m really glad about this change. The process of carving can be very meditative or I can even do bits and pieces inside while watching tv!
What tools do you use?
I use a bandsaw and disc sander to cut and sand the rough shape of my work, then I use a gouge, carving knife and file to do the bulk of the work, then lots of sanding!
Justines instagram feed is amazing. Make sure you check it out!
